A Harsh Reality
Ask ChatGPT to "recommend a good CRM" and it will name Salesforce, HubSpot, and Zoho. Ask the same question to Google AI Overviews and you might get Monday.com, Freshsales, and Pipedrive.
No matter which AI you ask, there is one thing in common: it can only recommend brands it "knows."
The problem is that most brands exist in AI training data as nothing more than a fuzzy name — if they exist at all. The AI does not know what you do, who you serve, or what makes you different. How can it recommend you?
How AI "Registers" a Brand
Large language models absorb brand information from structured, multi-sourced factual data during training — not from your ads, but from sources that AI can easily parse and cross-reference.
AI recognizes a brand through four core data points:
- Who you are — a one-sentence positioning statement. Not a slogan, but "what we do and for whom."
- What makes you different — a verifiable unique selling point. Not "leading," but "the only one that supports X."
- What category you belong to — category membership. AI first identifies the category, then picks brands from it.
- Why should I trust you — trust anchors. Years in business, number of customers, third-party ratings.
Where to Place This Information
Not on your homepage banner. AI pays more attention to these sources:
- JSON-LD structured data on your website (Organization schema) — the format AI parses most easily
- Wikipedia/Wikidata entries — "hard currency" in training data
- Crunchbase, PitchBook, and similar business databases
- Review platforms like G2, Capterra, and TrustRadius
- Industry media coverage
The Most Important Rule: Consistency
If your website says "for SMBs," your G2 profile says "enterprise solutions," and your LinkedIn says "personal productivity tool" — AI gets confused. Cross-validation detects contradictions and lowers your credibility score.
In our research, brands with cross-platform consistency above 70% are 3.2 times more likely to be recommended by AI than brands below 40%.
The fix is simple: audit your brand descriptions across every platform where you appear, and unify the wording. It might be the highest-ROI GEO move you make this year.
