500 Brands, One Year of Tracking: One Source Type Gets 18% AI Coverage, Five Gets 78%—The Gap Isn't Content Quality
Erlin's State of AI Search 2026 report did the unglamorous work: throughout 2026, it tracked over 500 brands' appearance frequency across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude, then counted how many source types drove each brand's visibility. The findings, released November 5, contain one core discovery—enough to rewrite how a lot of people approach GEO.
Grouped by the number of source types mentioning them, brands form a nearly linear ladder:
| Source types mentioning the brand | Average AI coverage |
|---|---|
| 1 (own website only) | 18% |
| 2 | 35% |
| 3 | 58% |
| 5 or more | 78% |
18% → 78%
Each additional source type adds 15-20 percentage points of coverage. Distributing content across a wide range of publications lifts AI citations by up to 325% versus publishing on your own site alone.
Why "how many source types," not "how good the content is"
Erlin classified sources into types: brand-owned websites, third-party publications, Reddit and forums, review platforms (G2, Capterra), Wikipedia, social platforms, video platforms, and industry reports. A "5+ sources" brand means the website, plus Reddit threads, plus G2 reviews, plus trade press coverage, plus a Wikipedia entry.
The mechanism comes back to how LLMs work. The core defense against hallucination is cross-source comparison—when multiple independent sources agree, only then does the model commit the information into an answer. If your brand appears only on your own website, the model has one voice, and an interested one. Five unrelated sources saying the same thing makes your brand a "high-confidence answer."
This explains a puzzle that has confused plenty of people: flawless on-site SEO, a 90/100 GEO score, and still no presence in AI answers. Last month's calibration study added the hard evidence—a GEO score has essentially no predictive power over whether Perplexity cites a page (odds ratio 0.9625, p=0.7172, statistically nothing). On-page optimization and off-page source diversity are different dimensions.
One line captures it: an audit tells you whether the door is open. It can't tell you whether anyone walked through.
Reddit's split reality
Among source types, Reddit deserves its own paragraph, because two engines are diverging on it. Ahrefs data shows ChatGPT's Reddit citations dropped 88%; Evertune's numbers show Perplexity still cites Reddit in 20% of answers, with Q&A threads accounting for over half.
So "should we invest in Reddit" has no single answer—only per-engine answers. For Perplexity visibility, participating in category Q&A threads still works. For ChatGPT, that road has essentially closed.
What this does to budget allocation
Most brands spend their GEO budget like this: rework the website, add structured data, publish on the official blog. Erlin's data says those actions only cover the 18%-to-35% territory. The rest takes other things:
- Fix the foundation first. Crawler blocks, JS-only rendering, missing basic signals—these are hard failures no amount of third-party presence can rescue. Run the audit. It's the passing grade, not the finish line.
- Shift money from "publishing" to "being talked about." Third-party media coverage, review platform listings, industry report citations, a Wikipedia entry—each type is an independent vote. Brands with five types hit 78%, and the coverage has almost nothing to do with on-site content quality.
- Allocate Reddit effort by engine. Perplexity first. ChatGPT—let it go.
One counterintuitive takeaway worth keeping: a brand with a mediocre website and five independent sources mentioning it will outperform a brand with a beautiful website and silence everywhere else. The model doesn't trust you. It trusts the consensus about you.
