Perplexity Cites Brands 22x More Often Than ChatGPT—You Might Be Optimizing for the Wrong Engine
Start with one number set. Someone went through 34,234 answers across major AI engines and counted how often brands get named. Perplexity mentioned at least one brand in 13.05% of its answers. ChatGPT: 0.59%.
13.05% vs 0.59%
Same question, two engines. Perplexity is 22 times more likely to name a brand.
If your GEO effort over the past year was aimed at "getting ChatGPT to mention us," that gap is worth a pause.
Four engines, four personalities
The gap isn't a bug. It's product philosophy.
Perplexity has been a search tool since day one: every answer retrieves from the live web by default, averaging 21.87 cited sources per response—nearly triple ChatGPT's 7.92. Its philosophy is that real user discussion beats polished marketing pages, which is why Reddit accounts for roughly 24% of its citations (Search Engine Land, January 2026).
ChatGPT leans on knowledge built up during training, with Wikipedia making up about 13% of its citations. It rarely names brands—but when it does, it matters: the platform drives roughly 87% of all AI referral traffic (Averi's analysis of 680 million citations), and its referrals convert at 15.9%.
The full picture, in one table:
| Engine | Sources per answer | Brand citation rate | Top source type | Referral share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 21.87 | 13.05% | Reddit (~24%) | ~2.8% |
| ChatGPT | 7.92 | 0.59% | Wikipedia (~13%) | ~87.4% |
| Gemini | ~6–10 | Moderate | YouTube/multimodal (23.3%) | ~4.7% |
| Claude | 5.67 | Low | Review sites/databases | Minimal direct |
The most uncomfortable line in Averi's analysis: for the same query, only 11% of domains get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Even inside Google, AI Overviews and AI Mode overlap by just 13.7%.
In plain terms: the Reddit thread that earns you a Perplexity citation does almost nothing for ChatGPT. One content asset can't cover all four engines. The data doesn't support it.
Citation accuracy varies just as much
Getting cited a lot isn't the same as getting cited correctly. The Columbia Journalism Review's Tow Center measured citation accuracy across platforms:
- Perplexity: 37% of responses contained citation errors
- ChatGPT Search: 67%
- Grok 3: 94%
Perplexity has the lowest error rate among major platforms. Its citations aren't just frequent—they're more disciplined. For brands, that translates into lower risk of being misrepresented: what it says about you is more likely to match what you actually published.
How to allocate effort
Allocate by goal, not by habit.
- For frequency, start with Perplexity. It's the most accessible engine for brand mentions right now. The lever is Reddit—not by posting ads, which the community punishes on sight, but by making a product worth discussing spontaneously.
- For traffic, ChatGPT is unavoidable. 87% of referral volume doesn't negotiate. It's picky about brands, which means the boring authority work—Wikipedia presence, mainstream coverage, industry database listings—can't be skipped.
- Google is its own calculation. Gemini favors YouTube and multimodal content, and it inherits the deepest ties to existing search. Your SEO assets still count there.
- Track each engine separately. Stop asking "how are we doing in AI?" That question has no single answer. Monitor citation rates per engine, or one platform's good news will hide another's silence.
One piece of context worth holding onto: AirOps found that 43% of marketers call AI search optimization a core 2026 strategy, but only 14% actually track AI citations. Most people are optimizing something they never measure. That gap is the window.
