GEO Just Got Its First Real Standards — The Wild West Phase Is Over

On August 6th, the China Advertising Association held its second round of public consultation for GEO group standards in Beijing. Attendees included CCTV.com, Douyin Group, Alibaba Qwen, Sohu, 360, and multiple GEO service providers — covering the entire industry chain from platforms to AI model developers to optimization specialists.

This wasn't an industry meetup. This was the process of setting rules.

Around the same time, the GDMS Global Digital Marketing Summit, together with Miaozhen Research, released the "2026 Brand GEO Action Guide" along with the first official GEO service provider directory. Sixteen agencies were listed, categorized into comprehensive service providers, technology platform providers, and data monitoring specialists.

These two events together send one clear signal: GEO is no longer a buzzword anyone can slap on their pitch deck. It's becoming a formalized industry with standards, guidelines, and classification systems.

What This Actually Means

Six months ago, most brands needed you to explain what GEO was. That phase is over. Now a national industry association is writing the standards, a major summit is publishing action guides, and a leading research firm is building evaluation frameworks. When official institutions step in, it means the market has moved from "early education" to "formal implementation."

But formalization also means elimination.

Looking at the GDMS directory, capability gaps among the 16 listed providers are significant. Some focus on dashboards, some on content production and source placement, some on full-funnel execution. The standards discussion is trying to answer a core question: what does GEO delivery actually look like? How do you measure it? How do you guarantee quality?

The implication is blunt: saying "we do GEO" won't be enough anymore. You'll need to show results that meet measurable standards.

For Brands, the Window Is Closing

Once standards land, corporate GEO procurement will formalize quickly.

Until now, brands exploring GEO were figuring it out themselves — finding a knowledgeable provider, judging results by feel. That's about to change. Standards will define what "being cited by AI" means, what "improved AI visibility" means, what "effective GEO service" means.

Corporate procurement teams will use these standards to filter vendors. If your brand is still invisible in AI search results, it won't be because nobody's doing GEO — it'll be because the way it's being done doesn't meet the new industry benchmark.

There's another detail that's easy to miss. This standards discussion covers the entire chain — not just service providers, but also platforms like Douyin, Alibaba Qwen, and 360. That means platform-side infrastructure is aligning too. The AI search ecosystem will increasingly favor citing high-quality sources that meet emerging standards.

If your content isn't structured, authoritative, and traceable, it's not just that service providers can't help you — platforms won't feed it to AI in the first place.

The Market Is Global

This isn't only happening in China. A new research report this week compared the top 12 GEO agencies globally, evaluating them on documented AI citation results, platform coverage, monitoring infrastructure, pricing transparency, and methodology disclosure. Out of 43 agencies initially screened, only 12 had published at least one verifiable performance metric. Monthly pricing ranges from $3,000 to $15,000.

The gap is widening between agencies that publish real data and those that describe results in vague terms. As AI-generated answers capture more commercial search queries, measurable citation outcomes are becoming the only currency that matters.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT is evolving into a commercial platform. OpenAI and search marketing professionals are holding dedicated webinars on generating revenue through ChatGPT — not just visibility, actual sales. The transition from "AI as information tool" to "AI as sales channel" is accelerating, and GEO is the discipline that sits at the center of it.

What to Think About Now

Not "whether to invest in GEO" — that debate is settled. National standards are being written.

The real question is: when standards land and industry consolidation begins, which side are you on?

Are you among those who built data, experience, and content assets before the standards arrived? Or are you starting to catch up after?

The shift from "wild west" to "regulated market" has a window. It's not long. But it determines your position for years to come.
