I used to religiously check Baidu Search Console every morning. Indexed pages! Submitted sitemaps! Coverage reports! I felt like I was doing real SEO work.
Then I actually cross-referenced the data against my server logs, and I realized something embarrassing: about 90% of the "indexed" pages in Baidu Search Console had never received a single organic click. Many had never even been crawled by Baiduspider.
Here's what's actually going on.
The Baidu Indexing Mirage
Baidu Search Console reports pages as "indexed" based on sitemap submission, not on actual crawl confirmation. You submit a sitemap with 500 URLs, Baidu reports 500 as indexed, and you feel great. But the actual Baiduspider crawl logs tell a different story.
In my case, out of 168 submitted blog posts, Baiduspider had actually crawled fewer than 20. The other 148 were "indexed" only in the database — they'd never been seen by the crawler, never been parsed, and certainly never ranked for anything.
Why This Matters for GEO
If you're targeting the Chinese market and relying on Baidu Search Console data to make decisions, you're flying blind.
The real source of truth is your nginx access logs. Look for Baiduspider in your crawl logs. Count the actual fetches. That's your real indexing progress — not whatever the console is showing you.
For GEO specifically, this has an extra implication: AI search in China doesn't primarily pull from Baidu's index. Chinese AI platforms like Doubao (豆包), Kimi, and DeepSeek maintain their own crawlers and their own indexes. Baidu's data is only relevant for Baidu's own AI products.
If you're optimizing for Chinese AI search visibility, you need to optimize for the AI-native crawlers — not for Baidu's index.
What To Actually Do
1. Track real crawler activity, not console reports. Your access logs are the only source of truth. Set up log analysis to track which AI crawlers are actually visiting and how frequently.
2. Submit to multiple platforms directly. Don't assume Baidu submission covers everything. Submit your sitemap to IndexNow, Bing Webmaster Tools (which feeds into other platforms), and any Chinese AI platform that offers direct submission.
3. Test, don't trust. After submitting content, manually search for it on Doubao, Kimi, and DeepSeek. See if it actually appears. Console data is aspirational — real search results are reality.
The Baidu console isn't lying to you maliciously. It's just showing you what you want to see instead of what's actually happening. Treat all search console data as a hypothesis, not a fact — and verify it against your own logs every time.
